The Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is a 2-year training program with 2 cardiac track positions and 1 thoracic track position per year. With the Program's recent 5-year accreditation with a commendation by the ACGME Thoracic RRC we feel the University of Pittsburgh Thoracic Surgery Residency Program is one of the premier programs in the country. Through a combination of strong clinical surgeons, creative clinician scientists and the support of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Healthcare System and the University of Pittsburgh we can provide you with an exciting environment in not only the basics of cardiothoracic surgery but also a glimpse into the new frontiers of therapy. We are proud of our graduates who have distinguished themselves both in academic positions as well as top private practice institutions throughout the country and their continued loyalty to us reaffirms our mission of excellence.

We have an unusually strong combination of staff committed to clinical excellence as well as scientific inquiry. The centerpiece of basic research is the McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine which has already become nationally known for its programs in artificial organ development, basic research in genetic and stem cell therapy as well as biomaterials sciences. We have been designated the first National Tissue Engineering Center in the USA. The Hillman Cancer Center provides a unique opportunity for the residents to gain intense exposure to all aspects of cancer patient care, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, palliative care and surgery. Our staff is well aware of the precious resource that all our candidates represent. The past year has seen substantial improvements in the resident curriculum with the preservation of training experience within the framework of the mandates of the new duty hour rules from the ACGME. We have provided a lecture series which fulfills the requirements of the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association’s minimum requirements and have instituted thematic journal clubs for both the cardiac and thoracic tracks.

Our program is designed for rotations in adult (both at UPMC and the VA), pediatric, thoracic surgery, and cardiopulmonary transplantation, which includes experience with ventricular assist devices. Board qualification will be possible after two years. In June 1999, we received approval from the RRC to add a thoracic track, a two-year slot, to our standard CT surgery training positions. This track will heavily emphasize thoracic surgery and will also qualify the candidate for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center on campus are the primary training centers used for the cardiothoracic residency experience. The program is a two-year program with a recommended third year as a clinical instructor. During this third year graduates receive an appointment at an appropriate increase in salary as they are appointed instructors in cardiothoracic surgery and are encouraged to submit charges for their services. Third year is not mandatory but allows residents to sharpen their skills in specific areas of interest including minimally invasive surgery; transplantation; cardiac assist devices and complex heart failure; aortic and valve surgery; or thoracic surgery. Finally, in this third year we would encourage an affiliation with the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine where participation in large animal studies with ventricular assist devices or participation in the tissue engineering labs is available.

Applications are accepted through and must be received by March 31. The website is https://www.erasfellowshipdocuments.org/. It explains general information on how to request certain items that are required for the completion of the ERAS Application. It includes information on required fees, how to request a token that is needed to access an ERAS application and contact information for ERAS which is operated by the Association of American Medical Colleges. Any questions can be e-mailed to myeras@AAMC.org or you may also contact the Help Desk at 202-828-0413. PLEASE INDICATE ON YOUR APPLICATION IF YOU ARE APPLYING FOR THE CARDIAC TRACK; GENERAL THORACIC TRACK OR WOULD LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR EITHER TRACK.
